… it’s great fun and it’s rewarding.
The girls I work with might be different ages and come from different backgrounds and go to different schools but at Guides they work together, encourage each other and make lifelong friendships. My role as leader is to provide opportunities for them to do that. You can get crafty, invent challenges and games, visit fun places, get out doors and light fires, camp…
I love getting to know the girls too. It’s really important to listen to what concerns them, offer support where appropriate and encourage them to dream. I’ve met some amazing young women and have helped and encouraged them to grow in confidence, step out of their comfort zones and try something new – that’s incredibly rewarding.
Girlguiding is a powerful organisation to be a part of! We give girls a voice, whether that’s to deal with online bullying, display a talent or join a diversity debate in the House of Lords (read the full story).
And it’s not all about the girls – I’ve had some amazing opportunities myself, such as camping in Iceland, training guide leaders in South Africa, being part of a government select committee on the UN Rights of the Child and hosting a parliamentary reception!
